'Lights Out' - Seminar Presentation

 'Lights Out' - Seminar Presentation

This seminar proved to be extremely informative and helpful in developing this concept further for the upcoming proposal. In my presentation, I relied upon my developed mock-ups (see below) to act as a visual aid in partnership with my explanation of 'Lights Out'.

Unfortunately, my peers whom I presented to are extremely familiar with motorsport and more specifically Formula One so it wasn't an impartial opinion of the concept as a whole. However, I believe their feedback was indicative of how it would be perceived by intermediate and those with a new/old interest in open-wheel racing.

Presentation:

In the presentation itself, I broke 'Lights Out' down to the fundamentals of its concept.

A tabletop board game in which the players compete with each other to succeed in a season. The players will be presented with randomised scenarios related to occurrences in a standard race and on occasion anomalies. Their fate will be decided by dice rolls and their progression through a season will reflect the outcomes given.

Each player will be provided with a deck of cards at the beginning of a season which represents attributes of their team. The player is allowed to choose 5 cards to create their team. These cards could represent their aerodynamics, pitstop, drivers, sponsorship revenue etc. This will affect what the player can/can't achieve throughout the season.

For instance, when a dice roll doesn't go in the players' favour regarding rear wing regulations a player with the relevant card can use their aerodynamic card to lessen the disadvantage given out to their team. Thus gaining speed when compared to the other players.

When scanned these cards give further context to their attributes through visual media, this works in tandem with the explanations given on the card itself.

Expansion packs and alternative versions of 'Lights Out' which represent other areas of motorsport (bikes, rallies, stock cars etc.) will be made available to refresh the experiences given and ensure that each 'season' varies from the next.

Summarised Feedback:

  • The font choice for the logo is not very legible and should be changed for accessibility and also uniformity of style across the game.
  • The trading card's design is striking and visually informative.
  • Tyre marks are a cliche within motorsport branding, for 'Lights Out' to stand out from pre-existing motorsport-related tabletop games another niche representative would be good to find.
  • The concept itself has room for expansion into other areas of motorsport and can be moulded as such.
  • An idea was proposed of 'bad' trading cards which put the player at a disadvantage in certain areas for which they have to strategise a workaround.
  • Scenarios given within the game itself should be broad so as to not 'pigeonhole' the players or result in a dead end before the end of a session.
